Making halloumi in the village of Tochni

All travel ideas

Halloumi is the pride of Cyprus — and nowhere does it taste better than where it's made on the spot. In the village of Tochni, in the centre of the island between Larnaka and Lemesos, you experience agrotourism the Cypriot way.

What you'll do

With a local family you learn step by step how fresh goat's and sheep's milk turns into halloumi: curdling, folding, brining and adding the signature mint leaves. Afterwards you sit down for lunch with your own cheese, grilled over charcoal, with village bread, olives and tomatoes from the kitchen garden.

Why it's special

Tochni and neighbouring Kalavasos are the pioneers of agrotourism in Cyprus. No show for tourists, but real village life: you join in the work, share the meal and hear the stories of three generations.

Niki's insider tip

Combine the workshop with a night in a traditional village house in Tochni — the beach is a fifteen-minute drive away, but the evening calm in the village is priceless. We're happy to book the houses for you.
