Kolossi, the crusader castle of Commandaria
Among the vineyards and citrus groves west of Limassol stands a surprisingly well-preserved piece of the Middle Ages: Kolossi Castle. This square crusader tower from the fifteenth century was once the headquarters of the Knights of Saint John — and the place where history, mythology and wine come together.
Knights and sugar cane
The castle was the centre of the 'Grande Commanderie', the richest estate of the knightly order. You climb the spiral staircase past the knights' halls to the roof terrace, with sweeping views over the vineyards and the south coast. Next to the castle stand the remains of a medieval sugar factory — sugar was more precious than wine in those days.
The cradle of Commandaria
The sweet dessert wine the knights grew here took the name of their commandery: Commandaria, the oldest wine in the world still in production, with roots in antiquity. The villages on the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains still make it to family recipes today.
Niki's insider tip
Combine Kolossi with the ancient city of Kourion, ten minutes away — together they make a perfect morning of culture. Finish with a Commandaria tasting at a family winery in one of the wine villages towards the mountains.
