Kourion — an ancient theatre with a sea view

All travel ideas

Few places in Cyprus leave an impression like Kourion. The ancient city sits on a cliff eighty metres high, and from the top row of the Greco-Roman theatre you look straight out over the Mediterranean. In summer, performances are still staged here — a 2,000-year-old theatre that is simply still in use.

What you'll see

Beyond the theatre you'll find the House of Eustolios with beautifully preserved floor mosaics, Roman baths, an agora and an early Christian basilica. The information panels tell the story well, but a guide brings out far more — we can arrange one as part of your travel programme.

Practical

In summer, arrive right at opening time (8:15 am): there is little shade on the site. Wear sturdy shoes; the grounds are extensive and uneven in places.

Niki's insider tip

Below the cliff lies Kourion Beach with a few tavernas at the water's edge. Culture first, then a swim and fresh fish — that's how we do it ourselves, every single time.

When to go

year-round; early morning in summer

Explore the ruins without rushing

Kourion is rewarding year-round. Spring and autumn are more comfortable for a longer walk across the exposed site; in summer we visit early.

We adapt the day plan and activities to the weather, local conditions and any seasonal opening hours.
