Larnaca, more than an arrival city
Most travellers land in Larnaca and drive straight on. A shame, because this laid-back coastal city has plenty for a wonderful first or last day of your holiday: a palm-lined promenade, one of the most important Byzantine churches of Cyprus and a salt lake where thousands of flamingos gather in winter.
Saint Lazarus and the old town
At the heart of the old town stands the Church of Saint Lazarus, built over the tomb of Lazarus — according to tradition, he lived another thirty years on Cyprus after being raised from the dead. The church is one of the island's most important religious monuments. Around it you'll find narrow streets with craft shops and coffee houses that still feel genuinely Cypriot.
The salt lake and Hala Sultan Tekke
Just outside the city lies the Larnaca salt lake, with the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque on its shore among the palm trees — one of the most atmospheric spots on the island. From November to March the lake turns pink with flamingos; in summer it becomes a glittering plain of salt.
Niki's insider tip
Is your flight not until the afternoon or evening? Then end your trip the way I always recommend to my guests: a last walk along the salt lake and a relaxed lunch at one of the friendly beach tavernas on the Finikoudes promenade, ten minutes from the airport.
When to go
year-round; flamingos from November to MarchA city that changes with the seasons
Larnaca works year-round. The salt lake and birdlife are seasonal, and sightings always depend on rainfall, migration and local conditions.
We adapt the day plan and activities to the weather, local conditions and any seasonal opening hours.
