Protaras & Fig Tree Bay, the finest family beach

All travel ideas

On the east coast of Cyprus lies Protaras, a relaxed resort town with the most famous beach on the island: Fig Tree Bay. Golden sand, crystal-clear water that deepens ever so slowly and a small rocky islet within swimming distance — no wonder it's a firm favourite with families.

Fig Tree Bay

The beach owes its name to the centuries-old fig tree that still stands there. The water is so shallow and calm that small children can play safely, while snorkellers spot the prettiest fish around the islet just offshore. Sunbeds and watersports are plentiful — but come early and you'll have the sand almost to yourself.

The coastal path along the bays

From Protaras a beautifully laid-out coastal path runs along the rocky shore: bay after bay, with wooden boardwalks, viewpoints and steps down to hidden swimming spots. Heading south, you can walk in an hour to the stunning Konnos Bay, on the edge of Kavo Greco national park.

Niki's insider tip

Walk the coastal path early in the morning, before breakfast — the sea is mirror-flat and you'll have the bays to yourself. And stay on the beach for sunrise at least once: Protaras faces east, so the sun rises beautifully straight out of the sea.

When to go

beach season May to October; the coastal path is lovely year-round

For swimming and quieter coastal moments

The warmer months best suit the beach and sea. In peak summer, early morning and late afternoon are often calmer and more comfortable.

We adapt the day plan and activities to the weather, local conditions and any seasonal opening hours.
